Happy Juneteenth: Honoring the Fight for Freedom

Juneteenth isn’t just a holiday for African Americans, it’s a celebration of freedom to be appreciated and respected by all Americans. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, announcing that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were free. This came more than two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. The delay in spreading the news highlights the complexities of our country’s fight for liberty and justice.

Juneteenth marks the beginning of the end of slavery in the United States, a milestone that belongs not just to African Americans, but to all individuals who fought selflessly and tirelessly alongside them to ensure our country lived up to its values. It’s a reminder that these core values of liberty and justice for all have been hard-won through persistent struggle and the fighting is never over. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery, the 14th Amendment granted citizenship and “equal protection”, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 worked to eliminate racial discrimination. These are achievements for all Americans, symbolizing the progress we’ve made together.

President Ronald Reagan once said, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on." This isn’t just about African American history, it’s about American history. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty and requires constant effort from every citizen to safegaurd our freedoms.

This Juneteenth, understand that liberty is an American value worth celebrating and protecting. Our freedoms must be defended through active participation in our civic processes. Engage in government, especially locally, vote, and stand up against any encroachments on our liberties. Freedom is a cause that unites us all, and by staying vigilant and involved, we honor the sacrifices of the past and secure a better future for everyone.

Juneteenth is a day for all Americans to come together and celebrate our shared history, commitment to freedom, and the immense contributions of black Americans. It’s not just about looking back, it’s about taking action today to ensure that liberty remains a reality for future generations. Let's celebrate Juneteenth as a powerful reminder that the fight for freedom is ongoing and that it requires each of us to stay engaged and vigilant.

Happy Juneteenth!
